***
The 4-volume series Le Cabaret des muses is freely inspired by the life of the painter Toulouse-Lautrec in Montmartre, and his encounters with Van Gogh, Degas and Gauguin.
Gradimir Smudja attended the Academy of Arts of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (Belgrade), then he painted and became a caricaturist for a newspaper. He also worked for museums in Germany and some galleries in Switzerland and Italy.
He left his country in 1982 to protest against the political regime in place and emigrated to Switzerland. There, he worked as a painter for a gallery owner, reproducing the paintings of the great Impressionist masters. Eclectic, he made copies, worked on canvas, on wood and made caricatures before finding a job as a drawing teacher in Lucca, Italy, where he now lives.
In Vincent and Van Gogh, Gradimir Smudja imitates some of Van Gogh's paintings.
Smudja's technique is watercolour on paper. In January 2004, "Le Bordel des Muses" deals with another painter: Toulouse-Lautrec with a different technique, watercolour on canvas. "The thread of Ariadne's Art", another work by Gradimir Smudja, is unwound by a little girl, accompanied by her cat in this work.
